What is the Use of a Book Without Pictures

Rachael Kowalski, Shawnee State University

Abstract

To answer Alice's initial question in the classic book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this research project investigates the importance of illustration in children's literature. Children's books have historically been a key part of an early education, both at school and at home. From wordless picture books to graphic novels, pictures have been an ever increasing element of children's literature, but how effective are they in improving literacy and educational outcomes? This project discusses not only the role of illustration in children's education, but also how the utilization of imagery affects children's engagement, vocabulary, visual literacy, and understanding across multiple levels and subjects, especially as books begin to enter the interactive and digital age.
