Abstract

Scholarship about the science of reading affirms the importance of teaching phonics and phonemic awareness to beginning readers. However, despite evidence from neuroscience explaining how people learn to read, poor practices in teaching children persist in elementary schools. Further, online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected young learners' reading progress. Recognizing the statewide literacy gaps, the Ohio Department of Education awarded Shawnee State University a two-year grant, Literacy LEAPS, to strengthen literacy among children from kindergarten through fourth grade through small group tutoring. SSU education majors tutor children in 30-minute sessions three to four times a week using a curriculum rooted in the science of reading. In this session, four Literacy LEAPS tutors will share information about the urgency and importance of literacy intervention, the documented growth of children in the program, and their personal and professional growth as preservice educators from this experience.
