Abstract

Catheter acquired urinary tract infections have prolonged hospital stay, as well as additional hospital and patient costs. Catheter acquired urinary tract infections can be reduced greatly by following evidence-based practice guidelines and by using sterile protocols/ techniques. Many facilities use catheter specific antibacterial wipes to prevent bacteria growth on catheters. Nurses can use clinical judgement for when to remove foley catheters, thus promoting advocacy and their ability to improve patient care and outcomes.
